Contour line project

This is the first compilation of the sketches I made. I reached various levels of resolution in the short time that I had drawing an images meaning the some of the pictures turned out better than others. I typically take my time when I draw and this exercise helped me to improve on capturing the essential lines and forms a of an object more quickly.

In class we were supposed to make free hand contour sketches from a diverse selection of objects that Prof. Carson provided for us. the objects were completely random and had no relation to each other. After completing these quick sketches we were supposed to take the theme of contour drawing to the next level.

Whilst thinking about how to further explore the ideas and implications of contour sketches I decided to add some colour to my existing sketches to get some inspiration. I think that colour always adds a different dimension and feel to a composition, even if they are applied as randomly as I did in the composition above.

Andy Warhol: Contour Line Exploration

As an additional inspiration and guidance through the concept of contour drawings we were told to investigate Andy Warhol and his early contour line drawings. Warhol created a range of Contour drawings in the 1950s. He used them as a quick channel to express ideas, to brainstorm if you will. Contour line drawing were the first step of a lot great of ideas he had. Contour drawing have the freedom of not needing high amounts of detail and resolution to convey a message they reduce an image or an object down to a few shapes lines and strategically placed negative space.

Contour Line Exploration: continued

As a final product and to apply the contour lines I drew into my own context I "borrowed" an idea from a car youtube that I love to watch; dailydrivenexotics (DDE). Wrapping car cars in vinyl wraps is a trend that has enveloped the world of car customisation because they are more customisable and a lot cheaper than physically painting the car. Wraps, if done well, look exactly like paint but aren't permanent meaning they can be removed when the owner of cars doesn't like them anymore. Damon from DDE had a fun  idea to  wrap his car with a matte white wrap that when viewed closely exposed a pattern of contour drawing of the world's most famous racetracks. I think that the design looks awesome and it somewhat reminded me to of the aesthetic of my contour drawings.

Above you can see an image of Damon's Lamborghini and its racetrack inspired wrap. I find his wrap-choice very interesting because the pattern looks convoluted and busy from a distance however once one gets closer it becomes more obvious and clear. I also like the simple black, white and blue color-way because the pattern on the wrap is already so busy that adding a bunch of colour would make it too visually overwhelming along with somewhat swallowing the lines and contours of the car. I used photoshop to overlay a pattern that constitutes of my contour drawings over the car on the right to make the inspiration for my idea clear.
